Te kōrero o Paul , Paul's story
Paul Alexander wrote a reflection on his first visit to a marae, during Matariki Celebrations and PHARMAC's visit to Takapuwāhia Marae.
My visit to the Takapuwahia Marae for Matariki
What a day, I really appreciated being able to go to the Marae for our Matariki celebrations! As we arrived at the Marae early we were fortunate to hear some stories from various people about the beginnings of the Iwi and the connection to other Iwi. It was my first time in a Marae and I learnt a great deal about the Maori culture personally, the nature of tapu and the protocols of entering a Marae, and the importance of whakapapa.
It really made me appreciate the work that is needed to create a Marae as I entered because of the amazing wood carvings surrounding you, knowing that every carving represents somebody important to the Iwi. Although the speeches in Te Reo were lost on me it was great to be a part of. The waiata we sang were well received and although the waiata “Te Timatanga” was more challenging to learn, the practice sessions and singing on the bus paid off. The kai was great and I was lucky enough to speak with Mason Durie before his presentation on rongoā. It was very interesting to learn of the history of rongoā, and the use of the native plants and trees in the traditional healing methods used.
I found it a great way to reflect on the past year, and a real learning experience into the Maori culture, and I am sure everyone else did too!
