Matariki - Takapuwahia Marae
My experience…
What stood out for me the most from our experience at Takapuwahia marae was the opportunity to learn how one of our colleagues (Marama) was closely connected to the marae. The significance of this for me was to hear the history around why she was connected to this marae, though it is not her own, and how she continues to hold close ties to it through her children. I think knowing someone who is a part to this marae made me more connected to the experience in a way.
Every culture has its own folk tales and legends, and what I particularly love about Māori culture is how history (as young as it is) gets passed on to the young and the new through telling stories. I have always loved listening to elders (of every culture) talking about their past and experiences, it’s a very effective and enjoyable way to learn about culture and ancestry.
